At 10:30am exactly 17 years ago, almost eight thousand people perished in what is still the worst calamity that ever occurred in the Philippines. Millions of gallons of mud, water and debris from the mountains of Ormoc plunged into the Anilao and Malbasag rivers destroying everything in its path.

Mother natures fury razed houses, flattened concrete buildings and devastated the city leaving behind a barren place with thousands of lives lost and the living struggling to pick up the pieces.

More than half of the dead reside in a place called Isla Verde, a low lying area located just behind the Anilao, just a mere five minute walk from my home.

I will never forget………..
